GARZÓN, E. (2010): Material Deprivation: risk factors

Over the past few years material deprivation has become one of the most relevant lines
of research in the analysis of low-income households, with a growing importance in the
field of studies of living standards. This paper analyzes the most important risk factors
of material deprivation. Among all risk factors commonly used, most authors consider
that age, the household type, and the labour market status are undoubtedly the three
factors explaining most of the variance in individual levels of deprivation. The
household type and age determine the needs differences, which reflect the importance of
the life stage people are in. The labour market status indicates the possibilities for the
person to receive current income and the capacities to ensure sufficient non-monetary
resources.
